It is well known for its capacity to create a smoggy haze of pollution in the air, particularly in highly populated locations.

Nitrogen dioxide is highly reactive and created through the burning of fuel, usually from vehicle emissions. In fact, the most toxic component in diesel emissions is nitrogen dioxide.

Nitrogen dioxide is extremely toxic, with high doses of exposure causing pulmonary edema (water in the lungs) and even death, which makes the monitoring of nitrogen dioxide build-up in areas such as tunnels and car parks essential.
