Ozone (O3) is a pale blue, highly reactive gas with a pungent odour. It exists both high in the Earth’s atmosphere (stratospheric ozone) and at ground level (tropospheric ozone). In the stratosphere, ozone forms a protective layer that shields the planet from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, at ground level, ozone is a major air pollutant that contributes to smog and can cause serious health problems.

Ozone is used industrially in water treatment, disinfection, and chemical processes. It is highly corrosive and can irritate the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, especially with prolonged exposure.

Due to its high reactivity, ozone is not stored or transported in large amounts but is generated on-site for industrial purposes. While essential in the upper atmosphere, ground-level ozone poses environmental and health risks, requiring careful monitoring and regulation.
